Psychotherapy for Trauma

What trauma can look like

Trauma can affect people in different ways — sometimes immediately, sometimes months or years later. You do not need the “right words” or a full explanation to seek support. If past experiences continue to affect you, help is available.

Who this therapy is for

This service may be a good fit if you:

  • Experience anxiety, panic, or hypervigilance linked to past experiences
  • Struggle with intrusive thoughts, flashbacks, or unwanted memories
  • Feel emotionally numb, disconnected, or “not like yourself”
  • Avoid situations, places, or reminders that trigger strong reactions
  • Want trauma-focused support without repeatedly reliving experiences
  • Are looking for a structured, evidence-based approach
  • Want to feel calmer, more in control, and able to move forward

You do not need a formal diagnosis — if trauma continues to affect your life, it deserves attention.

Who this may not be for

This service may not be suitable if you:

  • Are seeking general counselling unrelated to trauma
  • Prefer long-term exploratory or insight-focused talk therapy
  • Are currently in psychiatric crisis or require immediate support
  • Need intensive treatment for active substance dependence or unmanaged psychosis
  • Are not yet ready for structured trauma-focused work

If this is not the right fit, alternative support options or referrals can be explored.

Online Therapy

What to expect

All sessions (unless with prior arrangement) are offered online, allowing you to access trauma-focused support from the privacy and comfort of your own space. Online therapy can be just as effective as in-person work, particularly when using structured approaches such as BWRT.

What Online Sessions Look Like

Sessions take place via a secure video platform at a scheduled time. Together, we work at a pace that feels manageable, with a strong focus on emotional safety, grounding, and clarity. You do not need to share graphic details of your experience for the therapy to be effective.

BWRT is well suited to online sessions, as it relies on guided mental processes rather than physical interventions. Many clients find that being in their own environment helps them feel more at ease and in control.

What You’ll Need for Sessions to Work Well

To support effective and safe online therapy, the following are important:

  • A private, quiet space where you feel safe and will not be interrupted
  • A stable internet connection and a device with a camera and microphone
  • Headphones to improve privacy and sound quality
  • A willingness to engage fully during the session, including staying present and following guidance
  • A few minutes before and after the session to settle in and ground, rather than rushing in or out (a pre and post-session guide will be provided)

Safety and Support Considerations

Because sessions are online, it’s important that you:

  • Are not in immediate crisis at the time of the session
  • Have a plan for additional support should strong emotions arise afterward
  • Provide an emergency contact and your physical location at the start of therapy, as required for ethical practice

If at any point online therapy does not feel appropriate or sufficient, this will be discussed together and alternative support options can be explored.
